Christmas Eve

We were together
And yet we were alone
Residing in the same house,
And yet locked up in different worlds.
We spoke, but never talked
We heard, but never listened.
Our eyes were dead
Our hearts were cold
Living together
We could still be alone.

We lived in our own worlds,
Preferring them to being together
The dull light of these worlds
Lured us more than the bright ones
Which hing on that tree.
The carols played in the distance
But didn’t reach till our ears
Goodwill and cheer
Had been locked out of our house.

It was Christmas Eve,
And we had killed Christmas
Even before it arrived.
